Foster + Partners, the internationally acclaimed architectural practice based in Battersea London are looking to recruit a Quantity Surveyor to join our successful Sustainability department.


The Sustainability Group offers a wide range of skills to our projects at national, regional, city, infrastructure, masterplan, building and product scale. You will work for the group in London on some of the most exciting projects throughout the world. You will be a member of a dynamic group and, as a Project Quantity Surveyor (Building) with expertise in Lifecycle costing and whole life carbon assessment, will develop sustainably viable and evidence-based solutions with our design teams that transform our projects through Whole Life Impact techniques.



  • To recommend economically viable sustainable design practice for projects and competition entries.
  • To enhance and apply a database of Whole Life Cycle information, and tools, on our projects.
  • To develop numerical analysis using Cost Data, Ecological Footprint, Carbon Footprint and similar techniques and software.
  • To assist in developing a database, and knowledge base of the supply chain to assist Whole Life Cycle selection of low impact materials for projects and incorporating resource circularity principles where applicable.
  • To lead a procurement work stream fostering supply chain engagement and collaboration.
  • To run project workshops, and seminars, to inform economically sustainable design.


Qualities and skills required

• Strong background and understanding of quantity surveying of buildings.

• Experience as a Quantity Surveyor.

• Ability to engage with the Supply Chain and thorough knowledge of procurement practices.

• Understanding of Whole Life Impact and Lifecycle Value appraisal to projects.

• Supporting the development, interpretation and use of Bills of Quantities and specifications.

• Understanding of RICS and other industry Methods of Measurement.

• Basic understanding of international climate policy; including but not limited to the Paris Climate Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

• Understand of Circular Economy principles and techniques.

• Ability to communicate complex technical information in a non-technical manner.

• Be inventive, resourceful, pro-active and enthusiastic about sustainability in design.

• Have a flexible attitude and building good relationships at all levels, internally and externally.

• Ability to assist with the training of junior members on the team.

• Have excellent organisational skills.

• Have or approaching RICS (or equivalent) Chartership.

• Have excellent, relevant, education for this role.



• Experience of Carbon Footprint and Ecological Footprint techniques in construction.

• Experience of cost planning within LEED and similar assessment methodologies.

• Experience of Circular Economy principles and techniques.

• Understanding of marginal carbon cost abatement curves and how these can be applied during early stage of design.

• Ability to use InDesign, Illustrator packages
